Spotlight On: Duane Campbell

Connecticut Theatre Company’s “Spotlight On…” series continues with a look into the cast of The Prom. Get to know Duane Campbell who is portraying Trent Oliver in our production!

Introduce yourself to our audience.

I’m Duane Campbell, executive director for CTC and friendly neighborhood understudy.

What drew you to your specific role, and what has been the most rewarding part of playing them?

Trent is loveably flawed, like most of us! He’s got an optimism even in the face of adversity that’s very admirable. I’ve tapped into some of his confidence, or delusion, whichever it takes at the time.

What was your biggest “pinch-me” moment during the rehearsal or opening process?

I was late joining this wonderful cast, and that first rehearsal off book with all the love and support of those around me was really special. The community part of community theatre really is what it’s all about.

What is your favorite song to perform in the show, and why?

I love “It’s Time To Dance!” It’s a great song, and it represents the themes of togetherness and love that make “The Prom” what it is!

Do you approach your character by finding similarities to yourself, or by focusing on how they are different from you?

I love exploring those areas of a character that are foreign to me. This one has been fun and challenging because I’m definitely an introvert who enjoys being far away from the spotlight and Trent is on the complete opposite side of the spectrum.

Do you have any pre-show rituals to calm your nerves before going on stage?

Iced coffee and deep breaths!

If you could give advice to someone wanting to perform in musical theater, what would it be?

Just audition! It’s challenging to put yourself out there and be vulnerable, but it pays off in the best possible ways! It provides a community that is so rewarding.

What was your experience at your own high school prom?

Much like my pal Barry, this will be my first prom and I couldn’t be happier to attend!

What does it mean to you to perform a show that celebrates building bridges and finding the courage to be your authentic self?

The world can be a pretty daunting place, especially when you feel different from those around you. This show is a wonderful reminder that there are people that care, that minds can change, and that love can show up in the most unlikely of places. Getting to perform in a show that can inspire others, or just make their day brighter, is such a gift, and I don’t take it for granted. I’m excited to build this prom with all my friends!

“It’s a 21st century “Bye Bye Birdie,” with showbiz interlopers causing havoc before finding their better selves — but re-imagined with a millennial slant and an echo of “Dear Evan Hansen” empowerment.” FRANK RIZZO of Variety

“The Prom is hilarious, entertaining, and most importantly, moving. It highlights the ongoing cruelty in communities across the country. It highlights the ongoing barriers that minorities, specifically youth minorities, face daily.”  —  JESSICA NEU of onStage Pittsburgh

What makes The Prom “more than entertainment” is the way its social messages are seamlessly threaded throughout a compelling storyline. The drama clearly offers a lesson in how a series of individuals and a whole town (surrogate for a nation or the world?) can be transformed from homophobia to an acceptance of life-affirming inclusivity.—  JOAN LANCOURT of the arts fuse
