Spotlight On: Catherine Jones

Connecticut Theatre Company’s “Spotlight On…” series continues with a look into the cast of The Prom. Get to know Catherine Jones who is in the Ensemble of our production!

Introduce yourself to our audience.

Hi! My names Katie Jones! This will be my 30th show, and I’m so excited to be apart of this cast! Some things I enjoy outside of theater are gymnastics, running, singing, and dancing!

What drew you to your specific role, and what has been the most rewarding part of playing them?

I thought the ensemble would be so much fun to play, because you get to be in so many great numbers! Some rewards of being in the ensemble is that I got to really connect with the people who are in the scenes I’m in!

What was your biggest “pinch-me” moment during the rehearsal or opening process?

The biggest pinch me moment I’ve had was probably when we finally got a bunch of the musical numbers down and we got to sing it all together as a cast!

What is your favorite song to perform in the show, and why?

My favorite song to perform is definitely “It’s Time to Dance”!  It just has such a fun energy to it and I love the way everyone acts in it!

Do you approach your character by finding similarities to yourself, or by focusing on how they are different from you?

Personally for my school character normally I act like myself but with a little bit of difference like the meanness I portray towards Emma.

Do you have any pre-show rituals to calm your nerves before going on stage?

I like to do the shake out circle which is when you count down from 8 and shake your arms and legs!

If you could give advice to someone wanting to perform in musical theater, what would it be?

To encourage everyone including yourself to give your all even when it’s just a rehearsal,to also not boss people around and to treat every rehearsal like an audition.

What was your experience at your own high school prom?

I have personally never been to a high school prom yet,but from what I hear my districts are very welcoming and fun!

What does it mean to you to perform a show that celebrates building bridges and finding the courage to be your authentic self?

It is very important to me, because it lets you shine in your own special way,and gives you more confidence, then with building bridges it lets you connect with people more.

“It’s a 21st century “Bye Bye Birdie,” with showbiz interlopers causing havoc before finding their better selves — but re-imagined with a millennial slant and an echo of “Dear Evan Hansen” empowerment.” FRANK RIZZO of Variety

“The Prom is hilarious, entertaining, and most importantly, moving. It highlights the ongoing cruelty in communities across the country. It highlights the ongoing barriers that minorities, specifically youth minorities, face daily.”  —  JESSICA NEU of onStage Pittsburgh

What makes The Prom “more than entertainment” is the way its social messages are seamlessly threaded throughout a compelling storyline. The drama clearly offers a lesson in how a series of individuals and a whole town (surrogate for a nation or the world?) can be transformed from homophobia to an acceptance of life-affirming inclusivity.—  JOAN LANCOURT of the arts fuse
