Spotlight On: Niko Touros

Connecticut Theatre Company’s “Spotlight On…” series continues with a look into the cast of The Wedding Singer. Get to know Niko Touros who is portraying Robbie Hart our production!

Introduce yourself to our audience.

I’m Niko Touros, & I play Robbie Hart!

What aspects of your character do you find most relatable or challenging to portray?

I find Robbie to be someone who wears his heart on his sleeve, whether good or bad. He feels his emotions deeply and he’s a hopeless romantic- which people find lovable about him- but it also gets Robbie into trouble. These are all aspects of the character I find easy to relate to.

How do you prepare for a performance, both physically and mentally?

To prepare mentally, when I get to the theatre I make a point to check my pre-sets, all my props, costumes, etc. to just make sure everything is in its place. I sit somewhere quietly and breathe to ground myself and focus my energy. Physically, I try to prepare from the night before by drinking water and sleeping as best as I can. On show days, I like to wake up, do some light exercise, and warm up my voice on the car ride to the theatre. Then when I get there I can stretch, get a good warm-up, slowly enjoy some caffeine, and be ready for showtime!

What Is your favorite moment or song in “The Wedding Singer” and why?

It is so hard for me to pick my one favorite moment in the show, but right now my favorite song is a short one between Robbie and Julia in act 2, the reprise of “If I Told You”. Without giving too much away, the staging of it is just very thoughtful and Julianne who plays Julia sounds amazing!

When did you first start performing?

My first time performing was my freshman year of High School. I played Macbeth in a modernized version of the Shakespeare play and I was hooked after that.

What’s the last thing you do before you step out on stage / the curtain goes up?

I drink some water, jump around a few times, and fix my face.

What’s your favorite 80’s song/band/performer and why?

Has to be Queen. I have always loved their music since I was a kid and the way they commanded the stage.

What do you hope audiences take away from this production of “The Wedding Singer”?

I hope audiences get to turn their brains off for a few hours and enjoy some heartfelt comedy and some great music. There’s a lot happening in the world right now and I hope audiences get to take a little break from it all for the time that they’re with us. I hope everyone leaves smiling and humming a tune. Come see us!!!
