Spotlight On: Jakub Watras

 

 

Connecticut Theatre Company’s “Spotlight On…” series continues with a look into the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar. Get to know Jakub Watras who is in the ensemble of our production!

 

 

 

Introduce yourself to our audience.

Hey, im Jakub, and this is my first musical for the CT Community Theater, but that doesn’t make me any less excited to start!

 

The score for Jesus Christ Superstar is notoriously taxing. What are your specific vocal warm-up routines or rest-day rituals to maintain your voice?

When I first listened to the tracks, I fell in love with its uniqueness and how different it felt compared to other musicals. So I extensively listen to the music, day and night.

 

This show is largely a non-stop, sung-through rock rollercoaster. How do you maintain the dramatic arc and emotional stamina from the overture to the curtain call?

WATER. Tons and tons of water. Maybe keep a snack backstage, but I’m definitely drinking a ton of water for the shows.

 

The musical has been thrilling audiences for over 50 years. What do you think makes this sung-through rock opera still feel contemporary and relevant to modern audiences?

The Bible itself is a story told throughout generations. And this musical in specific has to be one of the most interesting and unique ways that the story has been told. Its taking a story that so much of the worlds population knows, with a fresh new take in a musical format, that no other show has quite done before.

 

Historically, this show has faced protests and intense debate regarding its content. Does that legacy of controversy cross the cast’s mind today, or has the cultural perception completely shifted?

Not particularly. I’ve been aware of its controversy from the start, but I feel as time progressed, the public has warmed up to this show, and celebrate it for the general good that it has done. It doesn’t disrespect the source material, it puts a new spin on it, and in the modern day, this show is more celebrated than it isnt. Though, it certainly does still carry some infamy.

 

From the opening overture to the final curtain, the show rarely stops for a breath. What is the rehearsal environment like trying to maintain that high-octane energy?

The choreography is certainly heavy, and it does take a toll. But we are lucky to have such great support behind us, always being understanding, always allowing us breaks when necessary, and this show definitely wouldn’t be possible without them!

 

How do you balance full-time jobs, school, or family commitments with an intense community theater rehearsal schedule?

Thankfully, we did most of this show in the summer. But the truth is, sometimes it’s just not possible. I have had periods where I couldn’t balance my time for the production with my responsibilities outside of it. But I am so lucky to have such an understanding and supportive group behind me, helping me catch up, and getting me to perform my best!

 

Community theater casts often become incredibly tight-knit very quickly. How did this specific cast build its chemistry and trust during rehearsals?

Our community has been so incredibly supportive. We are able to joke with each other, make great conversation, and overall build such outstanding relationships throughout production. Everyone here is here for a common interest, and that makes building a connection easy.

 

When local theatergoers leave the venue and head to their cars, what is the main conversation or feeling you hope they take home with them?
