Spotlight On: Julia Watras

 

 

Connecticut Theatre Company’s “Spotlight On…” series continues with a look into the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar. Get to know Julia Watras who is in the ensemble of our production!

 

 

 

Introduce yourself to our audience.

Hi there! I’m Julia, and I’m answering student at Newington High School. This is my first production with Connecticut Theater Company!

 

The score for Jesus Christ Superstar is notoriously taxing. What are your specific vocal warm-up routines or rest-day rituals to maintain your voice?

To maintain my voice, I do the same vocal exercises almost every day. I follow youtube videos, and often try to find new songs or exercises to help expand my range! For this show specifically, it has definitely brought be out of my comfort zone when it comes to vocals, dancing, and acting. But, the experience is definitely unforgettable!!

 

This show is largely a non-stop, sung-through rock rollercoaster. How do you maintain the dramatic arc and emotional stamina from the overture to the curtain call?

Whenever I’m offstage, I rest as much as possible. I immediately sit down, breathe, and wind down and in my head, review! This helps me have enough energy for this amazing show!!

 

The musical has been thrilling audiences for over 50 years. What do you think makes this sung-through rock opera still feel contemporary and relevant to modern audiences?

I think “Jesus Christ Superstar” still feels contemporary because of the risks it takes, and its definitely not a regular show. Nowadays, you never really see a show like “Jesus Christ Superstar”. The music is unforgettable, the iconic moments, the vocals, etc. bring this show to a level that not many musicals are able to reach

 

Historically, this show has faced protests and intense debate regarding its content. Does that legacy of controversy cross the cast’s mind today, or has the cultural perception completely shifted?

I do think in this day and age, and especially with what is going on in the world, the protests against this musical definitely do cross our minds. This show was something that wanted to be brought down and sheltered from the world. I love that we get the chance to share this story in a different way to so many more people, despite some public opinion. Since everyone in this cast loves this show so dearly, I adore how we brought a controversial show into this light!

 

From the opening overture to the final curtain, the show rarely stops for a breath. What is the rehearsal environment like trying to maintain that high-octane energy?

We definitely need a LOT of breaks to maintain this high-energy show. We definitely need each other to lean on. I don’t think I could handle such a show without the people I’m surrounded by!

 

How do you balance full-time jobs, school, or family commitments with an intense community theater rehearsal schedule?

It’s definitely difficult to balance everything, but I’m always sure to pause, slowdown, review, and start again so I don’t get extremely overwhelmed.

 

Community theater casts often become incredibly tight-knit very quickly. How did this specific cast build its chemistry and trust during rehearsals?

This cast is just full of the most wise, smart, funny, and wonderful people!!! I love how fast they welcomed me, especially with being new to the whole company. I really look forward to working with these people in the future!

 

When local theatergoers leave the venue and head to their cars, what is the main conversation or feeling you hope they take home with them?
