Spotlight On: Christine McGuinness

Connecticut Theatre Company’s “Spotlight On…” series continues with a look into the cast of The Wedding Singer. Get to know Christine McGuinness who is portraying Angie in our production!

Introduce yourself to our audience.

Hi, I’m Christine! I play Angie, mom to Julia. I also double as part of the ensemble.

What aspects of your character do you find most relatable or challenging to portray?

I’m not a mother in real life, so playing one, particularly one to an adult daughter, has been new territory for me.  I also play a character in the ensemble, and without giving too much away, this role is completely unlike anything I’ve ever done before. I’m excited for the challenge!

How do you prepare for a performance, both physically and mentally?

This show has so much dancing in it! And it’s high-intensity choreography. I am not a gym person, but I’ve been a dancer most of my life. I still take tap lessons sporadically.  Mentally, I try to take some quiet time just before a performance to center myself and get in the right head space.

What Is your favorite moment or song in “The Wedding Singer” and why?

My favorite song is “All About the Green.” It’s about the excess and debauchery of the 1980s, and it’s fun leaning into that theme. There are lot of references in the song; some I knew, some I had to look up. The entire show itself is really a love letter to the 80s.

When did you first start performing?

I started taking dance lessons when I was 6, but I got involved in theatre when I was ten. I played a villager in “Jack and the Beanstalk”. Growing up in Clinton, CT, I performed with the town’s community theatre. I was also in a few productions with Opera Theatre of Connecticut, mostly as a dancer.

What’s the last thing you do before you step out on stage / the curtain goes up?

Deep breath in and out.

What’s your favorite 80’s song/band/performer and why?

I’m a huge fan of 80s music, so this is hard to narrow down.  But I will say, “Walk Like an Egyptian” by The Bangles. I remember dancing around to a 45 of it in my living room, when I was very little. I made my dad play it for me on repeat. Loved the music video for the song, too, back in MTV’s heyday. I was dazzled by Susanna Hoffs. She was (and still is) so cool!

What do you hope audiences take away from this production of “The Wedding Singer”?

There’s a lot of chaos and uncertainty in the world right now. I hope this show brings joy and little bit of levity to our audiences. Our production of The Wedding Singer celebrates diversity and inclusion. And that love is love.  I’m proud to be a part of this show, and I can’t wait for everyone to come see it!
